Episode 06: “Jolly” Jane Toppan / Code Blue

May 9, 2017

Though rare, several known examples exist of doctors, nurses and other caregivers murdering patients.  One of the first such angels of mercy, “Jolly” Jane Toppan, had the desire to kill more helpless people than any other man or woman who ever lived.  By 1901, she would succeed in her goal.

This episode, we made the Code Blue cocktail.  A code blue refers to an emergency situation in a hospital.

To make the Code Blue, you’ll need:

  • 4 parts cranberry juice
  • 2 parts citron vodka
  • 2 parts blue curacao
  • 1 part lime juice
  • Granulated sugar

Moisten the rim of a chilled martini glass with lime and coat lightly with sugar.  Add ice, cranberry, vodka, curacao and lime juice to shaker, and shake until chilled.  Pour into martini glass and enjoy.

Episode 05: Wayne Nathan Nance “The Missoula Mauler” / Montana Payback

April 17, 2017

Wayne Nathan Nance committed a string of brutal murders around Missoula, Montana from 1974 to 1986.  It wouldn't be known, however, until an attempted crime in 1986 went wrong for Nance, leading to the discovery of evidence that helped solve a decade of murders.

This episode, we experienced our first real difficulty finding ingredients for cocktails, but we found a suitable backup drink in the Montana Payback.  The owner of Philadelphia's Hop Sing Laundromat (bar) named his creation for the Battle of Greasy Grass, aka Battle of the Little Bighorn, aka Custer's Last Stand.  The name "Montana Payback" just happened to fit perfectly with the crime for this episode.

Montana Payback

  • 1 fresh, whole Thai chile
  • 1 strawberry, hulled
  • 1.5 oz Laird's apple brandy
  • 0.75 oz El Dorado 6-year White Rum
  • 0.75 oz Velvet Falernum
  • 0.5 oz lime juice
  • 1 oz heavy cream

Muddle the chile and strawberry.  Add brandy, rum, falernum and lime juice with ice and shake until chilled.  Double-strain into glass.  Rinse shaker, and add cream.  Shake until cream turns to foam and pour over top of drink.
